For PKN ORLEN, corporate social responsibility means acting in a long-term and consistent manner for the benefit of sustainable development and in order to maintain a proper relationship between economics, ecology and ethics.
When developing its strategic approach to the issue of social involvement, the Company acts in line with key values, which include consistency in pursuing a goal, ability to cooperate, honesty, professionalism, responsibility and entrepreneurship. PKN ORLEN tries to respond to the expectations and needs of its environment in order to incorporate its social responsibilities into its strategy for the development of the Company. Simultaneously, in everyday operations the Company follows the principles specified in the Code of Ethics and observes, in accordance with the submitted declaration, the Global Compact principles.
New good practices are being developed and implemented by the Company. In the previous year, once again, they were ranked among the best practices, presented by the Responsible Business Forum in the “Responsible Business in Poland 2007 – Good Practices” report.
For many years, PKN ORLEN has been acting for the benefi t of natural environmental protection, and this was confi rmed by its being awarded the title of the “Partner of Polish Ecology”. For ten years, the Company has participated in the Responsible Care programme. In 2007, PKN ORLEN signed the Global Responsible Care Support Declaration, created on the initiative of the International Chemical Council Association (ICCA). This is a type of voluntary self-regulation within the chemical industry, which is intended to prepare it to meet the challenges raised by the principle of sustainable development with regard to chemicals management, and with respect to environmental protection, human health and safety all over the world.
In 2007, PKN ORLEN commenced, on a grand scale, cooperation with the Association for Care of the Blind in Laski. It was one of many charitable projects carried out by the Company in accordance with our declaration of openness to the surrounding world and sensitivity to the need to provide help. The scale of the help provided by PKN ORLEN is demonstrated by, inter alia, last year’s results of the “Philanthropy Leader” ranking. The Company was ranked 4th in the category of companies that donated the largest amount of funds for social goals in 2006.
PKN ORLEN also launched the “ORLEN – Safe Roads” programme, whose main element was the competition for the most interesting and effective initiatives aimed at improving road safety. The most important element of the programme is its educational part, which consists of a series of short films under the common title “Experiment Life”, which present the dangers caused by reckless behaviour on the roads.
PKN ORLEN has been a patron of Polish culture and art for many years. As a strategic sponsor, ORLEN has been a constant partner of the National Museum in Warsaw for 4 years. In 2007, the Polish Painting Gallery, the largest and one of the most representative galleries in Poland, benefi ted from ORLEN’s patronage. The Company actively participates in the project introduced by the museum, “Let’s bring back the glamour of Polish masterpiece paintings”, aimed at protecting valuable paintings and renovating them, and also providing appropriate conditions for displaying the collection in modernised exhibition halls.
This area of activities also includes actions whose objective is the protection and propagation of the works of Frederick Chopin. Last year, the Company supported the organisation of a concert in the National Philharmonic to mark the occasion of Frederick Chopin’s birthday, a series of Chopin concerts in Łazienki and the International Festival “Chopin i jego Europa” [lit. “Chopin and his Europe”]. Under the auspices of the Company, a series of concerts in the National Philharmonic, ORLEN Concertante, was also organised. The Company continued to support the artistic development of Rafał Blechacz, the winner of the 15th International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition.
As a patron of sport, PKN ORLEN supports the most important events and projects regarding motorisation and motor sports. PKN ORLEN is a sponsor of the Polish rally team – ORLEN Team – representing the Company and the country in the most important rally events organised in Poland and abroad. In 2007, a motorcyclist from the ORLEN Team, Jacek Czachor, an eight-time participant in the Dakar Rally, became the World Champion in off-road rallies in the 450 class.
PKN ORLEN was also the General Sponsor of the Rally Poland 2007, which was held in the hospitable territory of Warmia & Masuria. It was already the 64th edition of the rally, being a selection round for the Automobile Polish Rally Championship and Automobile European Rally Championship.
September 2007 saw the fi rst ORLEN Rally organised in Płock and its surroundings. The starting line-up simply had to include Krzysztof Hołowczyc, a rally driver in the ORLEN Team.
The season of automobile rallies in 2007 was closed by the Barbórka Rally, of which PKN ORLEN was the general sponsor. Krzysztof Hołowczyc once again triumphed on the legendary Karowa, the most spectacular section of the Barbórka Rally, in which the participants were fi ghting for the title of the “Karowa King”.
Once again, the Company was a patron of the Science & Technology Symposium “Chemistry 2007”, the 12th International Exhibition of the Oil and Gas Industries and 5th International Science & Technique Conference organised by SITPNiG. Appreciating the increasing importance of alternative energy sources, the Company supported the 1st International Conference POLBIOF’2007 “Prospects for 2nd Generation Engine Biofuels in Poland”, the conference “Alternative fuels. Biofuels and biocomponents in Poland” and 4th edition of the debating forum “The monitoring and quality control system for fuels, biofuels, LPG and CNG”.
